Kids Room Area Rug
(Rug: 'SEAL' by Gan)
It is important to create a fun theme for your child's room and what better way to do so than with an exciting, vibrant and playful modern rug.
Why are rugs great for kids' rooms?
- Gives them something soft and comfy to play on
- Buffers noise
- Adds a splash of colour
It is the small things around the family home that children will remember the most, one of them being the texture and warmth of the rug that they spend so much their time playing on with their toys.
With such a huge collection out there of rugs with colourful characters, designs and patterns etc., making the right choice can often be difficult. To help you make right decision, we have put together some helpful tips to help you chose the perfect rug for your child's room.
Size and shape
The first thing you need to consider when choosing a rug for your child's room is how big the area rug needs to be. Generally speaking, room size area rugs are 60cm (2 feet) shorter than both the width and length of a room leaving a 30cm (1foot) border on all sides. Alternatively, you can play around with the size of the rug by thinking about which area of the room you would like to cover; play area, reading area, etc.
Rugs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. However, if you have a smaller space; a colourful round rug will be ideal in this case. Round rugs can also be useful for breaking up symmetrical lines and softening sharp edges. Need some round rug inspo? Take a look at our 'Universe' rug by Linie Design, or 'Bichos Y Flores' by Nanimarquina, which is available in three colour-ways.
Pattern
Something that is bound to catch your child's attention and keep them excited when playing with their toys on the floor is a bold, geometrical pattern. Below are some our favourite fun modern rugs that we're sure your child will love as much as we do.
Material
One of the most important things to consider when buying a rug for your child's room is the fibre. Synthetic, organic, cotton, wool… there are so many options out there to chose from, so it can be difficult to narrow it down to one material when choosing a rug for your child's rom. There are a lot of synthetic fibre rugs out there that you may be considering because of the fact that they're cheaper, however, rugs that are made from wool or other natural fibres will be your best bet in the long run.
Rugs made from wool have a 30% higher rate of stain resistance than the best synthetic fibres. This is because of the natural lanolin than lightly coats the surface of the wool, helping to stop the stains and dirt developing.
As well as a rug looking pretty and fun for your kid, essentially a rug must serve the purpose of security. Kids will always be kids; they will fall, fight and slip, therefore it is important to consider the thickness of the rug. A thicker rug will provide a substantial amount of cushioning, and will help prevent serious injury.
Safety measures
Please note that some carpets consist of fibres that have toxic chemicals, which can be extremely dangerous for a baby playing on floor. Having a good quality rug over the carpet will reduce such health risks.
Allergies
Organic wool is naturally flame and water-resistant. It even has antibacterial/microbial properties, making it a great choice for those suffering from asthma or allergies.
Colour
If your child's room is fairly simple and there is not much going on, then we suggest going for a rug with a bolder pattern such as our modern rug – 'Ajose' by Woven Essentials. This wool rug features a semi-repeating pattern using fantastic colour pallet and would make a great focal point in a room. If your child's room is filled with a combination of colours and patterns, we suggest going for a more solid rug which picks up a secondary colour in the room.
Add the perfect finishing to your little princess' room with our 'Mr Foxy' rug by Scion Living which is available in 4 different colours.
Here is our 'Global Warming' rug by Nanimarquina which would be best suited for a boy's room due to it's vibrant blue colour and fun panda design:
The child's input
Although ultimately it will be the parent's decision which rug will go in your child's room, it is important to make sure your child feels like their opinion is appreciated and valued. Allowing your child to help you make the decision will result in them appreciating and liking the rug more so than if you had excluded them from the decision.
Non-slip
Children always like to be on the move; toddlers are just learning to walk, and older children are bouncing around with all the enthusiasm and energy in the world. Therefore, it is important to consider how slippery the rug is. If a rug is considerably slipper you may want to consider an anti-slip matt, which is made from a special non-sticky formula, protecting rug backcloth and floor surface. Our anti-slip mats are ideal for use with hand-tufted, hand-knotted and shaggy rugs and are hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly.
Design possibilities are endless. However, we hope by reading through our easy steps, you are now more confident in choosing a kid's room rug making process fun and exciting!
